More City Funding for Non-Profits

At their July 26 meeting, the Asheville City Council will vote to hand out $375,500 of your money to local nonprofits.  The nonprofits plan to spend it on programs supportive of the City Council’s strategic priorities.  The Housing & Community Development Committee (HCD) refers to this latest giveaway as a pilot program for a restructuring of their Strategic Partnership Grant program.

The documents attached to the council meeting agenda for this item of New Business include:

  • Background Information on the Strategic Partnership Grants program,
  • Applications from nonprofits who requested funding,
  • A list of the programs that will receive funding.

We recognize the names of several of the applicant organizations from announcements of awards from other grant programs.  They know how to work the money machine!

Are these nonprofits spending your money wisely?  How will you benefit?  Do you have any oversight?  Has the Asheville City Council demonstrated a pattern of making wise financial decisions?

Maybe you were raised to trust that government would always do what’s best for you.  Aren’t politicians always watching out for their constituents?  Or have we been asleep at the wheel, allowing socialist activists and thieves to take control?  In either case, it’s still your money.  Doesn’t it make sense for you to know whether it will be spent wisely?

Here’s an idea!  Let’s investigate these nonprofits ourselves:

  • Select an award recipient from the chart below.
  • Review their application to learn how they intend to use your money.
  • Review the organization’s website.
  • Look at social media posts from the organization and its leadership.
  • What other entities provide funding to the organization?
  • Does the organization or the specific program seek to exclude individuals based upon skin color or ethnicity?
  • Do any local government officials or staff serve on the organization’s board?
  • Does the organization exclusively serve illegal aliens?
  • Does the organization or its leaders appear to advocate for left-wing, socialist, or Marxist goals?  Does the organization or its leaders seem to support anti-family, anti-conservative values?
  • If you had more time and money than you knew what to do with it all, Do you believe you might consider donating or volunteering to support the organization?  Why or why not?

It might make sense for “someone” to create a database of these nonprofits and board members and keep track of how much of your money is handed over to them.  Or do you think we should continue to trust that politicians and local government are watching out for our interests?

Of course, we hope you’ll find that the money is being invested with organizations that will spend it wisely on programs that will be for the common good. We just haven’t seen such wisdom from the Asheville or Buncombe government in a very long time. Please write back to us and tell us what your research has revealed.  We’ll find a way to format and present that information on our website.
