Buncombe School Board Elections to Be Held by District Starting in 2024

We did it!
Working together, something important was accomplished.

Recently, Republican candidates from the 2022 elections, local conservative activists and the new Buncombe County GOP leadership joined forces to advocate for fairness in the county’s school board elections. This collaborative effort inspired NC State Senator Warren Daniel to oppose left-wing state senator Julie Mayfield and encourage support for NC HB 66, a bill that mandates district-based elections for Buncombe County’s school board members.

We emailed you on May 30 to ask for your help with this effort. A handful of you responded and signed our petition with very little advance notice.  All of this made a difference!

On June 6, 2023, Governor Roy Cooper ratified the bill, which will be in effect for the 2024 elections.  Cooper originally vetoed the bill on March 8, 2023, but the Republican-controlled General Assembly overrode it on March 15, 2023.

Remember this occasion the next time you find yourself believing that nothing you do can make a difference. Because it’s not true. Every single action we take, no matter how small, has the potential to ripple out and create change. So never give up on your dreams, no matter how big or small they may seem. Because together, we can make a difference.
