How many of you pay attention to the Buncombe County Library Advisory Board?
At their October meeting, the board voted to keep the children’s book If You’re a Drag Queen and You Know It by Little Miss Hot Mess on the public library’s shelves.
The meeting minutes for the October 2022 Library Advisory Board meeting do not provide any details on the conversation that took place around the book. Nor does there appear to be any video recording of the meeting. The minutes tell us that no members of the public spoke during the meeting.
This raises questions about whether conservative viewpoints were considered during the discussion. If no one spoke up to represent these viewpoints, it is likely that they were not considered at all. This is concerning, as it suggests that the library advisory board may not be adequately representing the views of all library patrons.
There is currently an opening on the board for a resident living in Buncombe County Commission District 2. The Library Advisory Board generally meets every other month at 6:30 pm on Thursdays at a library branch or online.
