Approximately 50 – 60 adults and a dozen kids were present at the Board of Education on May 6 to attend the Buncombe County Board of Education meeting. Many of those in attendance appeared to be present to speak about the policy of forcing children to wear masks during the school day. However, an Education Board staffer and a sheriff’s deputy blocked our entry to the building and advised that we would each be allowed to enter the building individually, speak in a room separate from the board members for “precisely” three minutes and must then leave the building.

After close to 45 minutes of negotiation between the staffer and a representative from the no-mask group, no agreement had been reached on how to accommodate that request. All of the citizens present were then told by sheriff’s deputies that they would not be allowed to enter the public building or to deliver their comments. We were ordered to leave the premises or face arrest. Meanwhile, the board’s attorney reported on the livestream of the meeting that “no one signed up for public comment under the rules and regulations”. In fact, however, forty-one citizens had signed-up to provide comments.

The Political Transparency Project is in process of mounting a formal response to the board’s actions, and we are waiting to hear more from them on that effort.

The next meeting of the board is scheduled for Thursday, June 3. Are you pleased with how the board of education continues to require children to wear masks in the classrooms? Are you concerned about the influence of critical race theory on curriculum? Several of us will be present at their next meeting to voice our thoughts on these topics and to demand an immediate end to the student masking requirement. We are also interested in having the board take action to forbid critical race theory, 1619 Project and BLM propaganda from creeping into any curriculums

Regular Board meetings are usually scheduled for the first Thursday of each month., except that there is generally not a meeting held in July. Meetings are held in the Minitorium, located at 175 Bingham Road, Asheville, NC  28806.  You must sign-up at the meeting location before 5:30 PM if you wish to make public comment to the board.
